Bridge Bonds Pass by Nine Votes After Recount

Millvale will build its bridge. After a recount that ran past midnight at the county courthouse, the Question 4 bond measure carried by nine votes, ending a forty-year argument over how the valley's two halves should cross the Merrow River.

The measure authorizes six hundred thousand dollars, in the fiction, for a steel through-truss span at Foundry Landing, with a footwalk on the upstream side. Work could begin as early as spring, said the borough engineer, if the frost leaves the ground on schedule.

Opponents on the north bank had argued the ferry was service enough. Supporters counted the shift whistles at the mill and said a town that cannot cross its own river cannot call itself one town.

Mill Whistle

Third Shift Restored at the Woolen Mill

Two hundred looms to run past midnight for the first time since the flood.

Merrow Woolen will call back eighty weavers Monday, the superintendent said, on orders from two city clothiers. The whistle will sound at eleven each night, a sound older residents describe as the town telling time.

Night Freight Adds a Stop at the Yards

The 2:10 will now take on milk cars at Millvale Junction.

A4 - Continuations

Bridge Bonds, continued from A1

The recount began at four in the afternoon with two tables, six clerks, and a pot of coffee that witnesses describe as the strongest evidence offered all day. By nine the tally had narrowed to fourteen votes; by midnight, nine.

Council meets Tuesday to appoint a bridge committee. The ferry, meanwhile, keeps its schedule, and its captain keeps his opinions to himself.

Third Shift, continued

The mill's return to three shifts restores a rhythm the valley kept for sixty years. Boarding houses on Perry Street are already airing rooms.

Night Freight, continued

The added stop is a trial through winter. If the milk cars average fewer than six a night, the stop comes off the timetable in spring.
