Light, taken apart

We grind and polish optical glass to a few nanometres. The prism behind this page takes one white beam and shows you every colour inside it.

Step 01 / One beam

White is a crowd.

What looks like a single colour is seven or seventy, travelling together. A clean piece of glass is the quickest way to tell them apart.

Step 02 / Refraction

Each colour bends its own way.

Short wavelengths slow down more inside the glass, so blue turns harder than red. The angle between them is set by the glass and the cut, so we control both.

Step 03 / The fan

Now you can read it.

Once the beam fans out you can measure each band. That is how a spectrometer works, and why a flaw in the glass shows up as a flaw in the answer.

Flat to a fraction of a wavelength.

Custom glass

One-off cuts for labs that need an angle nobody sells.

Eleven people, one polishing hall.

Opticians, physicists and a retired clockmaker who still checks every edge by eye. We work in small runs and sign the test report ourselves.
