Marl and Kiln / Wheel-thrown stoneware / Leeds

Made by hand, one turn at a time

A small pottery that throws every piece on the wheel. The vase behind this page is shaped live: scroll and watch bowl become vase become bottle.

Step 01 / Centre

It starts as a lump.

Clay has to be centred before anything else. Get that wrong and the pot fights you for the next hour. Get it right and it feels like holding still water.

Step 02 / Pull

Walls rise under two fingers.

Each pull thins the wall and lifts the form. The ridges you see are fingers, and we leave some of them in on purpose.

Step 03 / Fire

Then heat does the rest.

Bisque first, glaze second, and a long slow cool at the end. Colour only arrives in the kiln, which is why we never quite know until we open the door.

Every piece thrown, not cast.
