Plan the city after dark

We design streets, blocks and lighting for neighbourhoods that are used all day. The city behind this page is generated: scroll to fly in and watch it light up.

Step 01 / Overview

From above, it is a pattern.

Blocks, streets and towers read as a grid. Most plans stop here. We start here, then go down to eye level where people actually live.

Step 02 / Street level

Then you are inside it.

At walking height the same plan is a canyon of facades. Width of street against height of building decides shade, wind and whether anyone stays.

Step 03 / Night

Lit windows tell the truth.

A district with its lights on at ten pm is working. Mixed homes, shops and offices keep the grid awake, and that is what we plan for.

Cities that stay lit all day.

-Buildings drawn
-Windows lit
-Altitude
-Local time

Work

Three kinds of project, each starting with a walk through the site.

Height and shade

A shadow study for a row of towers beside a school.

Fourteen planners and one big map.

Urban designers, a traffic engineer and a lighting specialist. Every project starts with a night walk of the site, in any weather.
